D., whose fame as a writer and speaker is so well known as to scarcely need further mention. He was born in Columbia, Mo., but came cast with his parents in 1853. He studied law, and in 1866 was admitted to the bar. Early in life he showed an inclination for newspaper work. While at school he became acorrespondont for a number of papers, among them the Eagle, and it was on that paper that he did his first real work.
