Ambushed and left for dead, trapper Jack Gannon is pulled from an icy Canadian river by Molly Sheffield and her son. It's Jack's sad duty to repay the Sheffields by reporting that Molly's husband died at the hands of outlaws-the same men who waylaid Gannon.
Hoping to help the new widow, Gannon takes Molly and her son on a search for her husband's gold mine, a journey that takes them to the town of Orville. There, Gannon runs afoul of the town gunfighter, Samuel Turner, while Molly gets close to the town banker, Alexander Morgan. Neither incident pleases Gannon, whose feelings for Molly are rapidly shifting from a sense of obligation to passion.
Gannon's instincts tell him something's amiss with the gold Molly thinks her husband mined, but he's distracted. In addition to Molly's ever-growing place in his heart, Gannon is all too aware that one of the outlaws who attacked him remains at large-and both men have reasons to want the other dead.
